While It Lasts

Geoff Hall

Melodic instrumental acoustic fingerstyle and rhythmic guitar with accompanying instrumentation.

While it Lasts is the second release from artist and composer, Geoff Hall. Unlike the modern instrumental and orchestral pieces found on Hall’s multi-award nominated first release, Understanding the Signs, the focus of this project is the acoustic guitar.

To those who follow Hall’s music, this shift in genre should come as no surprise for two reasons. The first is that Hall’s primary instrument is the guitar, and it has been previously mentioned that he studied the instrument with world renowned artists for almost two decades before acquiring a degree in Orchestration and Film Scoring. The second is that, although the focus of While It Lasts is fingerstyle and rhythmic guitar performance, followers of Hall's music will also recognize his melodic and harmonic accompaniment style represented through the other acoustic instruments in these pieces. Violin, viola, cello, English horn, piano, and even brass can be heard across the tracks on this album. Fans of Understanding the Signs will no doubt appreciate the filmscore-esque, Pheidippides, with its strong brass lines and string sections.

While It Lasts prominently features Hall’s acoustic guitar playing, which provides the central melodic and harmonic focus for the other instrumentation heard on the album. A range of guitars were used for this recording with an ear towards achieving the right tonal characteristics for each piece. The supporting instrumentation was similarly selected and intended to preserve the acoustic focus of the release.

Understanding the Signs

Geoff Hall

Instrumental music that blends New Age and electronic with film and contemporary classical to create an every day "personal soundtrack" that covers a range of experiences and emotions.

"Understanding the Signs" is the debut release from artist/composer Geoff Hall. These modern instrumental pieces have been orchestrated to combine elements of electronic, film, New Age, and contemporary classical music. While the titles are self-evident, the idea was to compose the music in a way that makes it easy to identify and connect with the emotional content of each piece. The release could be considered as a listener's "personal soundtrack" that covers a range of every day stories and experiences. They are for anyone who has ever felt hopeful, exhilarated, lonely, dedicated, confident, or sorrowful.

As a guitarist, it seems odd to have a first release in which the guitar is largely absent. The majority of instruments that were used in this project range from orchestral to electronic and were selected based on what each piece seemed to "need." In many ways, it felt like these pieces wrote themselves, and the instrumentation choices simply fell into place each time. After reviewing the final outcome, I believe the subtle (and sometimes overt) differences in instrumentation serve each piece, individually, better than if a more structured approach had been used to orchestrate them all.

That said, the next release is already underway, and the guitar will be claiming a large portion of the spotlight...
